Aaron, do you remember the first trailer of that season? It featured “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak, along with scenes of people looking sad and Jon Snow appearing to be dead. Everything seemed dark and gloomy.
Then Cersei made her famous choice: “I choose violence.”
After that, the episode became much more action-packed, with knights, swords, and battles. It felt like a major change in tone.
However, Cersei’s decision to choose violence was not as simple as it first appeared. The episode showed that different choices can lead to very different forms of violence.
For example, the expected battle at Riverrun never happened. Instead, Jaime threatened to kill a baby, which helped prevent a much larger and bloodier conflict.
The Brotherhood also talked about not being “butchers,” while still using violence against their enemies. These scenes showed that violence can take many different forms.
The Mountain’s attack on the Sparrow was another example. Although the scene was violent, it was presented differently from the brutal fight between the Mountain and Oberyn in Season 4.
There was also some confusing activity involving Daenerys. At first, I thought she might be flying around and attacking the fleet with her dragon, but the scene was difficult to understand.
I don’t mean this as a criticism. I actually found the strange, almost magical way the scene was presented somewhat appealing. It also made it easier to stop pretending that River run was still important to the story.
I also noticed a possible connection between the unclear explanations of the plot and the indirect way the violence was shown. Both created a strange and mysterious feeling throughout the episode.
